Painting with Jamieson Thomas – Discover Your Style

Tuition: $120, Museum Members receive a 10 percent discount on tuition

In this class we will discuss different approaches to the perception of a subject and the creation of a unique painting. We will analyze how artists explore and discover their own personal style. Students will choose to work from a live still life composition, photographic image, or from the imagination and will be guided as they seek their personal direction.

We will touch on the fundamentals of color, principles of composition, and various painting methods and techniques that you can use to bring a composition to life. Our goal will be to discover a point of departure that enables you to push your work toward your own personal expression, whether representational, whimsical, graphic, or abstract.

During the four sessions you will complete at least one painting. Working with a still life set up by the instructor or from a photograph you supply, you will learn how to paint from observation, measure, and use paint to bring the composition to life. While we will study the genre of “still life,” the techniques and methods learned are applicable to other genres such as portraiture, landscapes, and figurative.

Jamieson Thomas is a multidisciplinary artist who works in painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, and video to create provocative installations that speak to social and environmental issues. Well versed in painting techniques, Thomas adapts her style according to the subject she is working with. She studied at Skidmore College, the Arts Students League, Crealdé School of Art, and received her MFA at School of Visual Arts in New York City. She has participated in multiple group shows in Florida, Maine, and New York and has had solo shows at alt_space Arts on Douglas, FL and Parasol Projects, NYC. In her most recent exhibit, Jamieson created a site-specific installation for the City of Orlando, where the public was invited to collaborate to complete the piece by sewing into it or adding mementos that she and volunteer artists sewed. You can see more of her work on her website www jamiesonthomas.com.
