Themes:
February 5, What is Art?
While many critics and philosophers have spent their entire careers debating this question, we will attempt to make sense of it all in just an hour. After considering how art’s function has changed over time, we will debate the merit of a few controversial modern and contemporary works.

March 4, How is Art Made?
This session is all about process. We will contextualize our conversation by thinking about traditional artmaking methods and then consider a few contemporary artists who seemingly break the rules of “proper” procedure and materiality.

April 1, Why is Art Made?
There may not be a creativity gene that we can identify, but something certainly inspires artists to create! Motivations have changed throughout history, and contemporary artists must grapple with personal and cultural challenges indicative of our time.

May 6, Where is Art Made?
While Paris and New York were once the epicenters of the art world, there are now artists engaged in critical practice anywhere and everywhere. Let’s consider the international art market and how advances in technology have enabled artists to share their work globally.

Individual Sessions: $25
